The summer blockbuster has been around since Jaws smashed box offices in the 70’s, closely followed by another film you may have heard of, Star Wars.
Since it began, filmmakers and critics have been predicting the end of the summer blockbuster, but lately, it’s feeling all too real, as the Chinese and other foreign markets are now eclipsing the US in box office sales.
What does this mean for the movie industry, the entertainment industry, and creative work in general? As movie studios find themselves needing to cater to foreign audiences, how will this affect what they choose to green light, how the storylines are altered, even what actors appear in the movies?
