Jess Ly - Operations Associate
My name is Jess and I’m thrilled to be part of the Brunch & Budget Operations team. As a lifelong learner, I enjoy optimizing processes and finding solutions. I love working with teams and solving problems. With a background in web design and project management, I bring to the table a creative yet methodical approach to operationalizing teams.
A bit about my personal background — I’m a daughter to immigrant parents. From a young age, I watched my dad work long hours every day to provide for our family. His actions instilled a strong sense of work ethic and integrity in me, values that I strive to uphold daily. From my mom, she taught me how to practice compassion and patience, especially through difficult times in life.
Growing up, we did not have much money and, as a family, we were in constant survival mode. I remember, as a teenager from 7th to 11th grade, I slept on a patched-up air mattress. Our priorities at the time weren’t so much to buy furniture, but instead to keep the roof over our heads and electricity running.
As a first-generation, American-born Chinese, I’ve pushed myself to rise above challenges — challenges like our family’s financial struggles and even racial discrimination — by focusing on productivity, setting goals, and how I can make a positive difference in my community.
It’s heartbreaking that the wealth gap and racism persists in our country, even to this day.
As a team member of Brunch & Budget — I bring empathy, solidarity, and a professional set of skills to help empower our communities to rise above the inherently broken financial system.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, eating, traveling, and learning new topics.
