z – Brunch & Budget is Hiring!

Financial Planner/Partner | 90% virtual, 10% brunch

We are super excited that Brunch & Budget is in a place where we are ready to hire a full time Financial Planner/Partner. Financial planning is a tough and sensitive business. Our clients count on us to be there for them as they’re going through some pretty big, and often emotional decisions while getting their financial lives in order.

We need someone who’s game to shake up the financial services world with us. This is not just a financial planner job. We are looking for someone to become a partner in building and expanding the business and taking ownership of not only their role, but the growth of the company.

You are unafraid to think big and, at the same time willing to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work and in between stuff that it takes to help clients make real progress with their money. We have a diverse clientele, so you will learn how to understand and be sensitive to the unique financial planning needs of People of Color. It is important to us to continue to build a diverse team to reflect the needs of our clients, so we encourage, POC, women, and those of us also traditionally left out of the financial planning field to apply.

We are a small company, so this will be an all-hands-on-deck role. As you know, there is a lot of behind the scenes work that makes for a successful financial planning relationship. We want you to be involved and invested in the operations and processes that we use to serve our clients and give them a truly magical experience.

Here’s what we need from you:

  • The most important aspect of this role is being able to empathize with clients and put yourself in their shoes. You are listening, advising, coaching, and counseling often all at the same time and need to be coming from a place of understanding and non-judgment. Show us how you’ve demonstrated this in your past work.
  • This role is inherently client facing and sales-oriented. You will be meeting with client-prospects for 1-1 Brunch & Budgets, give advice on the spot, and to determine if they are a good fit for an ongoing relationship. While you don’t need to have a sales background, you will need to be comfortable with leading a fluid conversation and determining a client’s needs in real time.
  • The ability to manage yourself and your own schedule, as well as communicate remotely via messaging, video calls, and emails throughout the day. We are a virtual firm so transparent, internal communication is vital. Tell us how you communicate with your colleagues and coworkers now and how you would do it differently in a virtual role.
  • The desire to dig into all aspects of the business. This isn’t just a sales role or financial planner role, this is a role where you will be helping build a company, and that means it isn’t always glamorous. The hours are long and the expectations are high. How will you add value to our business in the first 90 days?
  • A love of technology and vision for how it can support a client relationship. Here’s a sampling of our tech stack: eMoney, PreciseFP, Dropbox, GSuite, MeisterTask, Acuity, Zoom, WordPress, Streak. How do you currently use technology in your personal and professional life in a way that benefits you and your work?
  • Your Series 65 or CFP® designation
  • Other designations like the CFA® or AFC® are a big plus. If you don’t have your CFP®, we expect that you plan to or are currently pursuing your CFP®
  • 1-2 years experience advising/coaching clients, coaching experience or training is a major plus

  • Meeting with client-prospects for 1-1 Brunch & Budgets and following up with Budge prospects.
  • Leading the entire financial planning relationship of ongoing Budge clients (up to 100 clients over the next 1-2 years). We expect that you’ll be able to lead client relationships on your own within the first 90 days
  • Creating and delivering financial plans, including cash flow modeling, spending/savings recommendations, debt paydown, credit report analysis, what-if scenarios, insurance needs, investment recommendations, estate planning, etc.
  • Meeting with Budge clients virtually on a monthly or quarterly basis to help them implement their plans and proactively managing client plans/tasks
  • Promptly answering all clients questions via email and facilitating relationships with other advisors, i.e. accountants, attorneys, investment advisors
  • Handling all financial advocate calls, including calling student loan servicers, credit card companies, collections agencies, investment companies, accountants, estate attorneys, etc.
  • Helping create processes to streamline financial planning service model and being involved in business development

FAQ’s answered:

  • This is a full time position. Honestly it’s more than a full time position.
  • Most of the job is virtual and remote. The bulk of the ongoing client relationship is done over video chat, phone calls, task management software, and email and all operations are in the cloud.
  • You’ll be meeting people in person for brunch in the NYC area and have about 5-10 brunches per week, based on how you want to structure your schedule (food lovers only apply!) and how many prospects you want to see per week.
  • We also have monthly in-person team meetings in the NYC area. If you’re not located in NYC, none of this rules you out, but come with some creative ideas for how you’re going to make that work.
  • Compensation. The big question. We offer a base salary plus bonuses based on experience and your contributions to the business, both in building and leading client relationships and overall business development.
    • We are trying to build something different from the ground up, so in all transparency, compensation won’t be as competitive as other firms to start, but since we are a smaller firm, we will also have the compensation conversation more frequently as we continue to work together and there is a lot of room for growth.
    • We have an anticipated all-in compensation range of $60-100k+ within the first 1-2 years, depending on how quickly you’re able to contribute to the growth of the business.
  • We do have benefits! 100% health insurance coverage, 401k with match, and we don’t track vacation days

So if we haven’t scared the shit out of you yet:

Please submit a cover letter or short video (!!!) + a link to your LinkedIn profile. We’ll reach out to you if we’d like to speak with you.

The first interview will be a mock video Brunch & Budget. We will ask that you find a {friend, loved one, stranger off the street} who is willing to have you lead a session with them and join us for your interview.
